Miss Sadie was surrendered by her owner due to an impending move and financial hardship. She has been loved, however she came to us with some medical concerns.

First off, Sadie was believed to be a Brittany by her owner, but Miss Sadie is an English Springer Spaniel. She is liver and white with a docked tail and has been given a Brittany cut, so her beautiful feathers are trimmed off. Sadie was fed a raw diet with grain free kibble added, but she was terribly underweight. We had committed to her based on a photo, and when we met Sadie, we couldn’t turn her down. She was so thin, you could feel her ribs and see her hip bones and shoulder bones. After a run to the groomers, it was discovered her paws were imbedded with chick weed stickers which had burrowed into her pads. She was the sweetest girl for the groomers to get those awful things out. A trip to the vet indicated she was at least 15 pounds underweight. She was treated with antibiotics for what was thought to be an infected paw. (Later diagnosis determined it to be a benign mass which doesn’t require intervention). She also needed dental cleaning with probable extractions.

After ruling out cancer or another disease causing her severe weight loss, we are working on giving her a healthy diet with lots of calories to help her gain weight. Since arriving in Rescue, she has gained 3 pounds!

Through all of this, Sadie has been a real trooper. She is very easy going, loves to get pets and cuddles, she gets along with other dogs, but she isn’t into playing with them at this time. She bonds quickly to the people around her. Her owner reported she has food aggression, so care should be given when feeding her.

She loves her car rides. She prefers to sit up front with the driver, but will rest quietly in the back seat when tethered, or in the crate if one is available for her. For all her weight loss, Sadie has an abundance of energy. She is out front on her walks, and loves to explore on hikes. She will start out pulling a bit, but will calm down and walk nicely after you get going. Sadie is also a great squirrel hunter! She gives the squirrel the impression that she doesn’t’ care about them, and then at the last minute lunges! She has caught many a squirrel with this strategy.

Update: After 3+ week in rescue, Sadie has gained 5+ pounds! She loves going for walks and is very active for a dog her age. She isn’t showing any food aggression while feeding side by side with my 9yo Brit. Sadie is really friendly to dogs and people, including my preschool grandkids:) She does love to cuddle resting her head in my lap! She sleeps quietly in a crate all night.

Medical update: Sadie had her teeth cleaned and didn’t require any extractions. She is currently on Denamarin for elevated liver enzymes and needs follow up bloodwork in a couple of weeks. Her xray showed arthritis in her hips and back but it doesn’t seem to slow her down!
