Looking for a running companion. Merle might just be your guy. He is a high energy Brit that I believe came from some hunting training/outdoors background. He does not do well inside a confined setting including a house. He is usually attached by leash to my side as I wander around the house. He has escaped outside but comes back. He wants to be free spirit. He is currently kennel trained and doing much better with the marking in the house. He loves to explore and really wants outside all the time. He loves to sit and chew on nylabones right next to you. He is a larger size Brit 50lbs. and because of his exercise habits he is quite fit. He has a strong and muscular build. If interested please fill out an adoption application.
Update 4.24.2024 Merle is still not progressing as we hoped in the house. We are considering some testing on him to see if it is a medical problem that is keeping him from learning how to behave in the house setting. If nothing is found then he will have to be considered an outdoor dog as the confinement of the indoors creates too much chaos and causes Merle to “act out”. He struggles to settle down unless he is stuffing something like a pillow or a couch or chewing on furniture. He does enjoy walks/runs and he will chew bully bones but not for extended amounts of time. The distractions of the house cause him to act crazy. I have only kept him on a leash in the house as his destruction and wild behavior continue.
Update 10.7.2024 Merle is now on a calming hemp chew which has helped him calm down tremendously. We have noticed a huge difference with him being on these and his behavior in the house. He prefers the outdoors versus the indoors. Indoors he can now focus and settle down. He does like to chew and unstuff toys. He has not gone after our couch cushions or pillows so we are progressing with that behavior. We have been using a band on him when in the house as he used to lift his leg but has not done this at all with the band on. He still needs a large outdoor space to run and he does come back to our house even being left outside to run free. He has been tested on an e-collar and does just fine. He will have all shots up to date this month. We do have to use a training collar on him for walking or running on a leash. He is not a hunter and is too free spirited to focus in the field. We have trained many dog for obedience and hunting and he just wants to run and take in the outdoors. If you are looking for a free spirited and independent companion then Merle is just what you need. Please submit an application for adoption
