Dog Story
The Joker is wild but what young Brittany isn’t! This southern country boy is celebrating the holiday season with a new life in ABR foster care. Joker comes to us from a quail hunting plantation where he was bred and trained as a rental dog at the hunt club kennels. At 23 inches tall and 55 pounds of solid sporting muscle, Joker is a strapping big boy and model of the true gentleman’s Brittany – intelligent, hard-working and high energy in the field, and a loyal watchful companion at home. Now Joker is learning all about the joys of being a house pet outside the kennel, and has made a marvelous transition to the good life experiencing so many things for the first time – real toys, cozy dog beds, chew bones! – after living in an outdoor kennel his whole 5 years, he still has a lot to learn! Imagine working on a country farm every day, then being invited to a cocktail party in the city – that’s our Joker!
Joker is learning housetraining, basic commands such as sit, wait, off and stay, and is mastering the come command since it means treats and praise! Joker is crate-trained and accustomed to sleeping quietly in his crate at night and when the family is out. He gets along very well learning from his older Brittany foster brother and is getting used to socializing with new dogs on outdoor adventures. All the strange things like loud cars, busy neighborhoods, and even tropical South Florida thunderstorms are a curiosity and sometimes even a little scary! Joker loves to play with toys and can often be found proudly prancing with a stuffed baby or tennis ball, zooming and tossing and hiding his newfound treasures in the sofa or an expertly dug hole in the flowerbed. Although checking out the countertops, dinner table and furniture are irresistible, Joker is eager to please and responds well to mild correction understanding his place in the pack. Learning leash manners is a work in progress as he navigates working scent while quartering even on the narrowest of sidewalks! Joker has a high prey drive and will chase cats or small critters. He is good with children but due to his large size and exuberant activity level will do best in a home with older kids. Joker has a sweet and affectionate temperament and his great joy is human attention. Once he’s had his exercise Joker settles down nicely in the house and can be found laying quietly nearby his people watching the world.
Joker is current on vaccinations, heartworm negative and on heartworm preventive, and microchipped. He will have a dental cleaning at the vet to brush up his teeth, and is being treated for sensitive skin due to the hard conditions of kennel life. Although Joker has adjusted beautifully to living indoors, he is a big strong fellow who very much retains the working instinct and high energy level of a trained bird dog. Joker will thrive in an active home experienced with the needs of Brittanys or other hunting/working breeds. Joker requires vigorous daily exercise with runs and walks, interactive playtime and attention from his people, and will do best with a job to do – whether as a family hunting companion, jogging or hiking partner, or fun activities like agility or obedience, he is ready for action! Our ideal goal would be for all family members (human and canine) to meet Joker to ensure we have a good fit. If you’re interested in welcoming a handsome lad to share the good life of family adventures, please submit the onlineadoption applicationand mention Joker-5181 before contacting his foster family.
