Gunnar is a very sweet and gentle dog. Gunnar is blind due to the poor nutrition he received. He likes being near other dogs but does not really engage much with them. Having friends is new to him, as is being in a house with humans. When he was first seized from the puppy mill, he was kept at the shelter and showed little movement other than pottying and eating. Since being in foster, Gunnar can be handled for grooming, vet exams and petting. He uses the back door to go into the yard, going up and down one step independently. We call him and praise lavishly, so he is able to locate with our voice as a guide. Being outside to just wander and soak up the sunshine is something Gunnar really likes. He rides very well in the car. Gunnar was not socialized at all until he came into foster. He lived in a pole barn as part of a pack in a puppy mill that was shut down. Despite being blind from poor nutrition, he can wander around the house and yard as he wishes. He uses his nose to guide himself. Gunnar is not yet taking treats from our hand, rather he will eat them after you set them down by him. He is beginning to enjoy being petted and groomed. To avoid startling Gunnar, talking as you walk thru the house helps him know where you are. When at the vet, Gunnar napped in the exam room! He does well visiting pet friendly stores. Gunner shows no interest currently in cats, he uses his nose for squirrels. Gunner has an activity level of low to moderate. Gunnar has improved walking on a leash. Using your voice to tell him what is happening helps him understand. Consistency and routine help Gunnar know what to expect and be ready for the handling. He shows no food aggression and now that he knows he will get fed twice a day and has water available always, he eats well and drinks often. Chewing on a bone is now something he does!!! Gunnar has also found his voice recently so that his nickname the past few days is Sir Barks A Lot! Typically he is a quiet dog who will amuse himself and has begun to enjoy being handled. One thing Gunnar has begun to do is when he is done walking, he just lays down and takes a break. Body condition and stamina was very poor so that Gunnar has slowly built up muscle strength and stamina. He will need more time to get there so short walks are best. A physical fence is a necessity for Gunnar to be safe. Gunnar is blind due to poor nutrition and should be checked again in a year by an ophthalmologist as cataracts are developing. Gunner is heartworm negative and up to date on his shots. If you want to give Gunnar the forever home he deserves and is waiting for, be sure to fill out the adoption application
