Meet Gilbert Gilbert is a very special, six-year-old, Brittany-mix. We adopted him from ABR five years ago as part of the international adoption program. Originally from Spain, Gilbert was rescued from what we guess was an abusive situation. Gilbert came to us very shy and timid. He would not come out from under our dining table for the first few days. Through time, Gilbert has overcome some his anxiety. He is a very sweet soul with unique needs. Gilbert lives on our one-acre property with his dog sister, Sammy. He also enjoys playing often with two other Brittany dogs in the neighborhood. Gilbert is a bit of a Houdini and requires a six-foot fence. He can jump anything five feet and under. Gilbert loves to bask in the sun and to cuddle at night. He is very loving and kind. One year after adoption, Gilbert went after another dog in our neighborhood. Up until that point he was never aggressive towards people or dogs. We sent Gilbert to a trainer to be evaluated for aggression. After a week together the trainer felt that Gilbert is not innately aggressive but highly anxious. When he returned from training his demeanor changed. He was more comfortable around new people and less timid and shy. We were elated for these changes! For the past few years Gilbert has been loving life by taking long walks, runs and bathing in the sun. He loves to snuggle at night and carry his stuffed toys around the house. He has warmed up to people and even greets guests at the door. He walks well on a gentle leader leash. However, he does not like to see other dogs on his walks. Recently, in the last year and a half, our family has grown and welcomed a baby. Gilbert is very gentle around the baby; however he has acted out in other ways. While suffering from an unknown infection, he bit a worker in our yard. Our vet was hopeful that the event was caused by Gilbert’s discomfort. Gilbert recovered and started taking a probiotic for anxiety. This seems to help him a great bit. Unfortunately, this has not changed his dislike for other dogs. A few weeks ago he managed to escape from our yard and fought another dog. Both dogs are fine, but Gilbert needed a visit to the emergency vet. Gilbert has made great strides these last five years. We love him very, very much. He has so many amazing qualities. He will curl up with you and love you for hours. He loves belly rubs and snuggles. Why he loves his dog sister and two other Brittany besties, but dislikes every other dog is unknown to us. Gilbert needs a quieter home with no children that is not in a busy neighborhood with tons of dogs. Please contact via email if you are interested in getting more info at britrescue@comcast.net
