Beau does require a meet and greet!

House trained – uses a dog door independently

Crate – uses the crate to leave specific toys, crated when we need to be away for errands

Leash trained – Walks nicely, rarely pulls

Car – Rides very well, likes going 

Children – Due to his size, Beau could easily cause a younger child to fall. He is more comfortable with older dog savvy kids.

Personality – Beau is smart, funny, loves people and belly rubs. He is initially shy in new to him situations, overcoming uncertainty fairly quickly with support from a trusted human. Normally barks he appropriately, to alert to company and when excited, rather than just to hear himself. Beau is a happy dog full of joy. Beau just wants to please and be loved the way all dogs should be. 

Behavior – Beau knows several basic commands (sit, down, wait, leave it) and appears to understand some words. He comes when called, waits his turn, is gentle taking treats, eats in the kitchen with several other dogs, shares bones/chews and explores toys.

Quirks – Beau has chosen certain toys, we refer to as his “woobies”, he loves to stuff in his mouth to carry around. These are typically thick, soft and quiet ones like the Kong cozy rabbit or moose.  Beau also likes to soak his toy in water and share, with Less frequently now!
He remembers where he leaves his woobies and may start off, turn around to go back and pick one up to carry. When he brings us one of his special toys, we ask him what he has and tug on it, he smiles bigger and his whole-body wiggles.
 Beau takes a little time to build trust and feel confident he is doing the right thing. He has responded very well to consistent expectations and routines. Having a job to do has helped improve his confidence.

Health – Up to date on vaccines, on heartworm flea/tick meds, neutered, has a very small umbilical hernia, teeth are good. Chronic ear infections were reported due to the gloopy ears and long coat. Meds resolved them and trimming the fur under the ear and length appears to have improved the air flow, so his ears are not prone to infection.
Beau was on two anti-anxiety medications when he came to this foster home. He was weaned off both his first two weeks with no negative effects.  A behavioral evaluation was conducted by a certified behavioral evaluator, who agreed with his foster home’s assessment. Continuing to build Beau’s confidence and trust should be done daily.

Needs – Beau needs to have consistent structure and responds well to verbal praise. Because he is a smart dog, nose work to drain brain energy, physical activity and verbal praise are important for him. He will test you to see if he will get the same results. Beau knows what he wants and likes as a smart dog. We have not observed counter surfing but would not trust a food source to disappear quickly!
Although his does have a low level of interest in most prey, he should not have cats as housemates.
Beau’s confidence is improving and he does best participate in activities daily that result in lavish praise and reward.
Not being the only dog in the house is better with a medium size spayed/neutered submissive friend would be his best situation.
