About ABR

American Brittany Rescue, Inc. is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization formed in 1991 as a cooperative effort of Brittany owners, breeders, trainers, and fanciers who ABR believes have a responsibility not only for their own dogs and the dogs they produce, but for the breed as a whole. For 30 years, the organization of volunteers has worked to rescue Brittanys and place them in loving homes. Over the years, thousands of dogs have found hope and a forever home, thanks to our placement efforts. Nearly 9,000 dogs have been rescued and lovingly adopted into carefully selected households. Included in this number are dogs from nearly every state, Canada as well as Greece and Spain.

This work is accomplished by an army of dedicated ABR volunteers. There are over 1,500 amazing, active volunteers located within all 50 states and across Canada. From the President and Board members to the volunteers and the all-important foster families, each one plays an important role.

ABR Leadership

The Board of Directors consists of 6-12 volunteer members who perform the roles of President, Vice President, Chair, Secretary, Treasure. The Board meets every other month and conducts the business of the organization during these meetings and by interim communication. State Coordinators at the local level are volunteers who are responsible for providing education and training to the volunteers in their state. They also play an important role in assessing the suitability of potential adopters. It is through this army of dedicated volunteers that Brittanys in need are discovered, rescued, transported, fostered, vetted, and adopted.

Brittanys are pulled from shelters, from the street and in some cases are surrendered to ABR by their owners, or abandoned because of an owner’s death. A foster home is identified for each dog and the animal’s medical needs are evaluated and provided through ABR funds. In some cases, all that is needed is vaccination and parasite control but in other cases the need is much greater. Some dogs come to ABR with serious health or behavioral issues, and in those cases, fosters manage the special care needed while the organization pays for the veterinary care.
