Dog Story:
Tucker wanted to share his journey with Britt friends as one of ABR’s lucky “forever-fosters”! Tucker came to rescue as a retired hunting dog who had always lived in an outdoor kennel and was past his prime in the field. Tucker was welcomed by an ABR volunteer and her Brittany boy who were searching for a new senior companion. Unfortunately it was found that Tucker had a number of medical issues and needed specialty veterinary care. Tucker was diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure, a severely enlarged heart and fluid in his lungs, as well as malignant eye melanomas. A team of expert vets worked to get Tucker back on his paws with evaluation of his heart and lung conditions, eye surgery to remove the cancerous melanomas, and daily medications to help with Congestive Heart Failure. In true Brittany spirit, right after coming home from surgery Tucker figured out how to get his cone-collar through the doggie door and headed for the woods running full blast! He celebrated his first holiday in a real home with his Britt brother and loves napping fireside on chilly evenings.

Tucker’s forever-foster mom sent an update on this special boy:
Tucker is doing well on the medications even if you can see his little heart just pounding sometimes. He is wonderful and loves the freedom to go from cuddling to hunting all day long. He will run like a crazy Britt and hunt for an hour and then jump in the fountain to cool off and walk around until he is breathing normally and his heart has slowed. And of course then we run in the house all wet! I think he is also improving because he was a hunting dog and is still very active and in good shape. I put a Whisper 3 GPS tracker on him and the little guy averages between 4.5 to 7.5 miles a day running around my woods. Of course between runs he cools off in the fountain and then heads for a nap in my lap!! He is such a joy to have around and hopefully we will have him for a long time to come!

Tucker would be very grateful for any Brittany Buddy  donations towards his surgery and ongoing medical care. The generous donations from our sponsors enables ABR to provide continued veterinary care and support for the special needs of long-term forever and hospice foster dogs, who stay with their volunteer families to enjoy a happy, loving life working towards the best possible health for their senior years. Tucker’s family and ABR are most thankful for the kindness of all the friends who make life better for rescue Brittanys every day!

Amelia fka Little Missy

(Florida)

Dog Story:
Imagine the sound of a moaning harmonica off in the distance...  picture an old dog turned out by people who really never cared for her, walking the streets alone and sick.  Now you hear happy music because a young lady found her, took her in and turned her over to ABR. More happy music as Herself took over her care.  Herself named this poor old thing Missy.  Flash forward to now.  I really hate the name. Actually I don't think Herself likes the name either because she usually just calls me Hey You.  But I digress.. back to the sad harmonica.  I'm sick and I won't recover.  I have heartworms that have enlarged my sweet old heart.  Plus I have spots on my lungs. And there's a mammary tumor that can't be removed because of my heart. Oh and did I mention my megacolon?  At first I thought that was a good thing.  You know MegaDog the Great has a MegaColon!  Well that's not what it means.  It means that I was kept crated for so long and not allowed out and being a very good girl I didn't soil the my home so my colon just grew to accommodate "stuff".  Do you understand the sad music now?  So I'm looking for someone who will let me end my days in peace.  And give me a good name.  I need a good name.
Your sweet old friend,
Missy aka Hey You

You would not know that Little Missy has health issues to look at her or see her in action. She's a real social butterfly - loves everybody, everything: people, dogs, cats. Right now it looks like her life might be somewhat short but she only knows "today" and she is enjoying and living it fully

Missy has found a "forever" foster home to provide the few things she has on her Bucket List: 2 squares a day, some belly rubs and a few car rides!

She is not a candidate for traditional heartworm treatment but will be fine on the slow kill treatment. Her megacolon issues are treatable with daily stool softener.

Won't you please consider contributing to her care?

Missy is spayed, up to date  on vaccinations, is heartworm positive but on preventative as per protocol for slow kill treatment.

Rebel’s life now is of style, sport, supper, and snacks. Oh, one more 'S'; snuggles-on-sofa! (ok, that's two more). Foster folks have watched her transformation these past few weeks. As Shiny New Rebel would tell you, life is terrific now. She is a single gal on the market, looking for a furever home to "match".

Rebel is a champion Security officer.
Her duties include patrolling the property, closely supervising all kitchen activities, alerting humans to potential intrusions by Amazon, the mail person, etc. She also is lovable, adorable and playful in between some well-deserved cutie naps.

Our girl is pretty good on a leash, of course those birds are a distraction.
She is also fond of long walks through the grass and mud, and will chase a ball but can get distracted by other things moving around. She not just a pretty face and has learned commands very quickly.  Reb doesn’t see need for “SIT”, but tasty treat rewards have reinforced that one. Not a fan of the bath, but the towel massage and brush out afterwards are sooo relaxing.

Meeting dogs is a work in progress b
ut Rebel gets more comfortable daily. Maybe the right "other" dog might become her new playmate and house buddy; but we are still working through leftover behaviors from her former life. Her outlook is good; and if she can bloom while living in our "townhouse" she definitely can RULE a big home and yard! If you are looking for an adorable, sweet, loving, playful gal, Rebel is the dog for you. Please no sight unseen adoptions for this girl. We feel it is important for all family members (humans and canine) meet to make sure we have a good fit. If you are interested in  Rebel please complete the adoption application.

History:
Rebel is one of 10 dogs surrendered to ABR in January 2020 after their owner unexpectedly died. All were living in outdoor runs with barrels as shelter. The family notified ABR and we took all into rescue. This little Britt girl is current on all vaccinations, Spayed, Heart Worm negative and on prevention medications. She also has been Micro chipped.

Hello. My name is Rocco but my foster mom calls me Buba and I seem to come to that better than my given name. I spent my first twelve years in a kennel in a backyard. I had little human or dog interaction. Despite this my foster mom says I am awesome!

Everything is new to me. Being inside a home I have now mastered. I am kennel and potty trained. The tv and household noises mostly don’t bother me. But I can be sensitive to sudden loud noises like pots falling or alarms. I recover quickly. My foster mom has been working with me on counter surfing and I have improved greatly! But it is advised to keep things out of a curious dog’s paws. Mom says I am really smart since I won’t come inside if I haven’t finished my business!

I am learning to talk dog with some new  canine friends. It is helping my confidence so don’t coddle me or I fall back into fear mode.  I handle car rides well but must be buckled in or crated if not I will end up in your lap. I settle well and do not get car sick. Mostly it just confuses me. So mom takes me everywhere she goes.

I am shy but warm up more and more quickly as time moves forward. I will need a patient owner willing to teach me how to be a dog. I already know how to cuddle and love you! Mom says I act much much younger than my age. I am healthy with only a mid grade heart murmur that does not affect my activity at all. I keep up with two adolescent canines and hold my own!

Rocko was one of 10 Brittanys rescued from a back yard breeder in Northern Illinois.  These dogs were living in outdoor runs with barrels for shelter.  The owner died and ABR was contacted by the family for assistance.  In ABR's care Rocco was neutered, had a dental, is now up to date on vaccinations, chipped, heartworm negative and on preventative.

Meet Teva, a sassy and oh so vibrant 11.5 yr old Brittany!  Don't let her age fool you though!  She can run as fast as a 1 yr old and STILL WANTS TO HUNT!  She is on the go… go.... go when outside.  When inside though, Teva just wants to snuggle with you and follow you around your home.

Teva has settled in very nicely into her foster home and now loves her foster brother.  They work together on the acreage chasing the birds or anything that peaks their interest.   You see, when Teva first came into rescue, she wanted to play with other dogs, but became very scared and would fight.  That was the OLD Teva...the new Teva has found her confidence and is making up for lost time!

Teva's perfect home would be one where there is land to run on, another dog to run/work with as well as owners who understand the breed and their needs.

Teva is up to date on her vaccines and heartworm negative and microchipped.  If you would like to bring this little firecracker of excitement into your home, then please fill out the adoption application and mention her name and ID#

History:
Teva was adopted by her family when she was about a year old and the family adopted another dog a year or so later.  They got along beautifully up until the last few years when they started fighting.  The family had to make the agonizing decision to surrender her to rescue in hopes she could find a better home and a happier life.

Vesper, (yes, as in Vesper Lynd the Bond Girl!) is a 10 year old spayed female. She came to ABR as an owner surrender due to personal reasons - no fault of her own!

Vesper is a very sweet girl with excellent manners. She knows, sit, down, stay, and "pound it" (fist bump)! Heck, this girl even gets in the bathtub on her own! She is also crate trained and goes in willingly. Vesper has also had hunting training, but showed no desire or drive to hunt, so she never did. As a bonus she has off leash and recall training!

She is wonderful in the house and is so happy to be with her people and very much enjoys the big toy basket! She is one to follow you around the house or set her head on your knee for love. Vesper is allowed on the couch with us, and loves to snuggle up.  She also loves to play with her foster brothers and gets so excited when they reciprocate. She would do best with another dog to play with.

Don't let her age fool you,  this girl is not slowing down any time soon. She has plenty of energy and enthusiasm, but can keep herself entertained with enough toys and chewys (she loves Himalayan cheese chews). She goes on walks alone or with her foster brothers once or twice a day. While she can sometimes pull on the leash she is getting better and really enjoys her adventures.

Vesper could stand to lose a few pounds - but we are working our way back to Bond Girl status.

Vesper has a mild heart murmur which has been checked out with an echo. She does not require medication or restrictions at this time. The vet recommends montioring and potentially another test in a year to be safe.

For more information or to meet Vesper reach out to her foster mom, Robyn!

Adopted 28 March 2020!!

Timmy is a sweet, roughly 32 pounds of petite remarkably wonderful personality, considering the situation he has come from. In the time Timmy has been with us, we’ve learned so much about this guy.

First the things we are working on: he is a jumper on people (looking for love), furniture and counters. He is a chewer of loose material (socks, kids clothing, & blankets), but we have diverted most of this energy with Nyla bones. And lastly, he has apparently never been trained any commands so he needs considerable work in this area on sit, stay, come, etc.

Now, what you’ve been waiting for: Timmy is crate trained & house trained (no accidents since he’s been here).  He is good with our kids, our resident dog, but his interest in cats is unknown. Timmy travels well in a vehicle, enjoys walks in the woods or on the road as he does extremely well on a leash. He also responds well to a tone on a hunting collar, but unsure of how he’d respond to the shock as we haven’t used it.

Timmy is an energetic soul, but certainly knows how to turn off his Brittany when indoors. He has been enjoying all of his new experiences now that his life is not contained to a small chain link kennel, fun for humans as well to see this guy act like a puppy soaking up life and learning about the world. He is exceptionally good at tunneling through fresh snow…
????

Most importantly, Timmy loves to snuggle, simply wanting love, a comfortable bed, and would be a great candidate for a lap dog!  Our family is in love with him, but we know that he will bring much love and companionship to those that open their heart and home for this fine gentle dog.

Please no sight unseen adoptions for this guy.  We feel it is important for all family members (humans and canine) meet to make sure we have a good fit.  If you are interested in Timmy please complete the
adoption application.
