Dog Story:
Tucker wanted to share his journey with Britt friends as one of ABR’s lucky “forever-fosters”! Tucker came to rescue as a retired hunting dog who had always lived in an outdoor kennel and was past his prime in the field. Tucker was welcomed by an ABR volunteer and her Brittany boy who were searching for a new senior companion. Unfortunately it was found that Tucker had a number of medical issues and needed specialty veterinary care. Tucker was diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure, a severely enlarged heart and fluid in his lungs, as well as malignant eye melanomas. A team of expert vets worked to get Tucker back on his paws with evaluation of his heart and lung conditions, eye surgery to remove the cancerous melanomas, and daily medications to help with Congestive Heart Failure. In true Brittany spirit, right after coming home from surgery Tucker figured out how to get his cone-collar through the doggie door and headed for the woods running full blast! He celebrated his first holiday in a real home with his Britt brother and loves napping fireside on chilly evenings.

Tucker’s forever-foster mom sent an update on this special boy:
Tucker is doing well on the medications even if you can see his little heart just pounding sometimes. He is wonderful and loves the freedom to go from cuddling to hunting all day long. He will run like a crazy Britt and hunt for an hour and then jump in the fountain to cool off and walk around until he is breathing normally and his heart has slowed. And of course then we run in the house all wet! I think he is also improving because he was a hunting dog and is still very active and in good shape. I put a Whisper 3 GPS tracker on him and the little guy averages between 4.5 to 7.5 miles a day running around my woods. Of course between runs he cools off in the fountain and then heads for a nap in my lap!! He is such a joy to have around and hopefully we will have him for a long time to come!

Tucker would be very grateful for any Brittany Buddy  donations towards his surgery and ongoing medical care. The generous donations from our sponsors enables ABR to provide continued veterinary care and support for the special needs of long-term forever and hospice foster dogs, who stay with their volunteer families to enjoy a happy, loving life working towards the best possible health for their senior years. Tucker’s family and ABR are most thankful for the kindness of all the friends who make life better for rescue Brittanys every day!

Dog Story:
Imagine the sound of a moaning harmonica off in the distance...  picture an old dog turned out by people who really never cared for her, walking the streets alone and sick.  Now you hear happy music because a young lady found her, took her in and turned her over to ABR. More happy music as Herself took over her care.  Herself named this poor old thing Missy.  Flash forward to now.  I really hate the name. Actually I don't think Herself likes the name either because she usually just calls me Hey You.  But I digress.. back to the sad harmonica.  I'm sick and I won't recover.  I have heartworms that have enlarged my sweet old heart.  Plus I have spots on my lungs. And there's a mammary tumor that can't be removed because of my heart. Oh and did I mention my megacolon?  At first I thought that was a good thing.  You know MegaDog the Great has a MegaColon!  Well that's not what it means.  It means that I was kept crated for so long and not allowed out and being a very good girl I didn't soil the my home so my colon just grew to accommodate "stuff".  Do you understand the sad music now?  So I'm looking for someone who will let me end my days in peace.  And give me a good name.  I need a good name.
Your sweet old friend,
Missy aka Hey You

You would not know that Little Missy has health issues to look at her or see her in action. She's a real social butterfly - loves everybody, everything: people, dogs, cats. Right now it looks like her life might be somewhat short but she only knows "today" and she is enjoying and living it fully

Missy has found a "forever" foster home to provide the few things she has on her Bucket List: 2 squares a day, some belly rubs and a few car rides!

She is not a candidate for traditional heartworm treatment but will be fine on the slow kill treatment. Her megacolon issues are treatable with daily stool softener.

Won't you please consider contributing to her care?

Missy is spayed, up to date  on vaccinations, is heartworm positive but on preventative as per protocol for slow kill treatment.

Miss Daisy

(North Carolina)

Hi Miss Daisy here! But I don’t think my foster mom has ever called me that name. It was given to me by the shelter I left. She just says “good girl” to me all the time. I’m a gentle, mature house pet. I know how to walk on a leash outside without pulling, I’m careful in the house so I don’t bump into furniture or other things and I never make a mess.  I’ll go to the door and may scratch to let you know I need to go outside. Although my foster mom says NO when I go to the trash for a smell.

I enjoy sitting or lying on the porch or patio, listening to the bugs, birds, and wind in the trees. In the house I rest peacefully while you use your computer, read, etc. I haven’t shown any interest in getting on the furniture, so Mom hasn’t encouraged me to get up on it. I ride well in the car without barking or slobbering the windows. Kitty is my buddy. I wiggle my whole rear end, not just my button butt when she comes up to me. We rub noses and sit together. But if she runs it’s game on.

I am getting healthier every day. I’m watching my diet very carefully and eating two small meals with lots of meds and supplements to regain my girlish figure and beautiful coat. I’ve been given all my vaccinations and will have a dental and microchip this month.  My long wooly fur was in very poor condition, so it was all shaved off the end of June but now it is growing back in nice, thick and shiny.

So I am just about ready for my "forever home" just need my dental and I am all set to go....  So if you think I would be a great companion to share the rest of my life with you then hurry hurry and fill out the adoption application and mention "Miss Daisy" so we can meet soon!

Pen

(Pennsylvania)

This girl is full of Brittany energy in a cute little body. You would never guess that Pen is 11 years old from watching her in the backyard or on a leash. She loves walks in the neighborhood and trips to local parks. Her original owner said that she likes long runs and that is absolutely her favorite thing to do. She will trot around a fenced yard non-stop for hours, outlasting much younger dogs in the foster family.
Pen enjoys having a crate and will go into the crate all by herself. She is very good with furniture; she's never jumped on furniture but if invited, she would, no doubt, happily be on the furniture all the time. She does find open windows to be very enticing and will put her front paws on window sills to get a better view and more outdoor smells.
Outside, she's interested in squirrels and birds but has not tried to escape the yard to chase them. She has also encountered other dogs, horses, and deer and has had no reaction to them. And she is not scared of fireworks. On walks, she wears a harness so she now joyfully anticipates a walk when the harness appears.

She is quite comfortable with all types of grooming: baths, teeth cleaning, fur brushing, cleaning her ears and filing her nails.
Pen was surrendered by her breeder and owner; formerly she was a kennel dog who competed in field trials. When Pen came into rescue, she was spayed and mammary tumors were removed. Biopsy revealed they were Grade 1 carcinomas, excised with good boundaries so the vet anticipates no recurrence. A significant heart murmur was present when Pen was first examined. She is scheduled to see a cardiologist on September 23rd to determine if she should be on medication. Pen is heartworm negative, on preventative, up to date on vaccinations and chipped.

If you’d like to give a sweet, spunky lass a retirement home and received plenty of love in return, please complete the adoption application and mention Pen.

MEET HANK! Available for adoption, but not for the faint of heart!

HANK is a lively Brittany who wants his person and strives for lots of attention.

HANK has a checkered past and has been living with a trainer for several months.

HANK needs to go to a home, preferably a one-person household where there are no other pets and not a lot of dogs out and about in the neighborhood. He needs a fenced in yard and an adopter who can be strict and firm with Hank, so he understands what his role is in his home and can happily feel comfortable and not threatened in any way.  He has been both on and off a light dose of Trazadone (for anxiety) and the trainer believes the medication is beneficial for Hank.

If you would like to hear more about Hank and his history, please contact me directly at my posted email address.

Adopted 19 September 2020!!

DOG STORY

Major is a 10 yr old neutered male. He is a very easy going boy who is loving retirement. Major gets along with everybody; dogs of all sizes and genders, cats, and kids of all ages. He's a slower pace kind of guy, and does enjoy short walks.  During the time with his foster family, Major has slimmed down to 40 lbs from a high of 65 lbs. which certianly helps his mobility. He has arthritis in his front legs and is on a daily anti inflammatory and joint supplements.  Keeping him at an appropriate weight will help with his arthritis.

Major has had a couple of dental surgeries since joining ABR and wil need steady upkeep on his dental needs (daily brushing and routine dental cleanings). His eyesight is good, but may be losing some hearing. Major loves to cuddle on the couch with his people, especially during thunderstorms when he turns into a nervous nelly.

Major would be a wonderful addition to a family looking for a dedicated companion and "lover" of all!

HISTORY

Major bounced around between 2 shelters.  He had medical needs that ABR committed to taking on.  He has had wonderful care in his foster home and is now ready to venture out to a home of his home!!
